Gravesite & Human Remains Relocation
Carlisle, PA
ERG supported the US Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, Mandatory Center of Expertise for the Curation and Management of Archaeological Collections (MCX CMAC) and the Office of Army Cemeteries (OAC) with the disinterment and analysis of Native American individuals buried in a cemetery located on Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, a site that is associated with the former Indian Industrial School (1879-1918). The cemetery was moved to its current location in 1927. ERG has been involved with this project since its inception in 2016 and has disinterred over 40 individuals over seven field seasons. During the first phase of fieldwork, a Phase I survey, desktop literature, and background research review were conducted. Disinterment’s were conducted using manual and mechanical excavations, and each individual was disinterred manually using the least invasive methods. All cultural materials were collected, analyzed, and photo-documented, and Forensic analysis and documentation took place on-site by an American Board-Certified Forensic Anthropologist. Confirmations of identifications were completed, and through the guidance of Tribal families and/or representatives, the remains were prepared for reinternment in their appropriate setting.

Archaeological Survey, Collections Management, and Mitigation
Portland, OR
ERG undertook various archaeological collections management efforts to rehabilitate the VAMC Walla Walla Hussey Collection. In support of two major and several minor projects at VAMC Walla Walla and following a 2010 Memorandum of Agreement (revised and executed in 2017), rehabilitation of the VAMC Walla Walla Hussey Collection served to mitigate the management of existing cultural resources. The collection included some 160 boxes excavated from Fort Walla Walla in the late 1970s and early 1980s by Larry Hussey, a since-deceased local historian and instructor at Walla Walla Community College who served as archaeological contractor to both VA and the City of Portland on a variety of undertakings during the period. The ERG team completed the work in accordance with the project scope of work that conformed to 36CFR79, as well as collections accessioning specifications and guidelines of Seattle's Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture.
