Innovation in HABS Mitigation
Corpus Christi, TX

On behalf of Garver Engineering, architectural historians conducted a Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) for the Gault Aviation Hangar at the Corpus Christi International Airport in Corpus Christi, TX. Considering the hangar was under the management of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), 4(f) compliance was required, and the completed document was approved by the Texas Historical Commission (THC) and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP). For documentation, the hangar was recorded using drone-based photogrammetry, large format photography, and research was completed on the building, Gault Aviation, the Gault Family, and the hangar’s two architects. Historians also created interpretative panels using Illustration software and authored an article for the Handbook of Texas Online.

Before demolition of the structure, ERG took large-format photographs and developed a 3D digital building model for public display and permanent archiving. Using automated aerial imagery capture and handheld photogrammetry, the 3D model was part of the historic mitigation. Hangar One - Corpus Christi International Airport.

Mission Espalda

Cultural Landscape Inventory
San Antonio, TX

ERG architectural historians conducted field surveys to update the the 2011 Cultural Landscape Inventory at the National Park Service's (NPS) request for the Mission Espada in San Antonio, TX. Updates corrected and appended the narrative as necessary to reflect recent changes to the landscape. The completed document presented the existing conditions inventory and the site analysis and evaluation, as well as treatment recommendations and proposed improvements developed by Commonwealth Heritage Group landscape architects, subcontracted under ERG Texas Services for the project.

Heritage Interpretation & Mitigation
White Sands, NM

As part of a State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO)-approved mitigation plan for the demolition of several Cold War missile optical instrumentation buildings at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR), in White Sands, New Mexico, that were eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), ERG prepared Mitigative Documentation for elevated cinetheodolite “Askania” shelters at the Red Butte Mitigation Instrumentation Site. An integral component of mitigation for the loss of the structures, ERG developed a self-contained interpretive exhibit for the WSMR Museum. The exhibit included three display-quality static panels that addressed topics such as the Red Butte site, early pioneers in instrumentation development at WSMR, and basic concepts of cinetheodolites and tracking telescopes. The panels were designed to mimic 1960s technical manuals and Blue Note album covers of the era with limited, yet complementary colors. In addition, ERG developed an interactive module entitled “Optical Instrumentation at Whites Sands Missile Range” that used newsreel footage, audio from oral history interviews, and slideshows to give the complex topic more depth.

ERG knows environmental laws and regulations. Working with local, state, and federal customers, we conduct compliance evaluations, develop environmental management systems (EMS), and maintain compliance in plans, permits and other regulatory activities. And we do all of that with an eye toward sustainability and minimizing environmental impact.
